Urgent Security Alert: The eSIM "Phone Cloning" Scam
Scammers are using a sophisticated trick to hijack mobile phone numbers, drain bank accounts, and steal identities. Here is how the scam works and how to protect yourself.
How the Scam Works
1. The Scare Tactic: You receive an unexpected phone call. The caller claims someone is trying to "clone" your phone and insists you must verify your identity.
2. The Bait: They give you a fraudulent callback number and send an email containing a malicious link.
3. The Hijack: If you call the number and click the link, you unknowingly hand over your personal account details. The scammers use this information to order a new eSIM card for your phone number from your provider.
4. The Theft: Once the eSIM activates on their device the scammers now receive your calls, text messages, and One-Time Verification Codes. They use these codes to break into your email and online banking, change your passwords, and steal money via fraudulent mobile deposits or e-Transfers.
How to Protect Yourself
• Hang Up Immediately: If you receive an unexpected call about security issues, do not engage.
• Use Trusted Channels Only: Never call numbers provided by the caller or listed in unsolicited emails. Only use the customer service number found on your official monthly bill or the provider’s verified website.
• Never Click Links: Do not click links in unverified emails or input verification codes on unknown websites. Always log into your accounts directly through official apps or trusted bookmarks.
• Monitor Your Accounts: Check your bank statements and mobile account status regularly.
